FrieAme AU where Friede's a paediatrician and Amethio's a terminally ill inpatient. Friede's in charge of Amethio's care and keeps telling himself not to get attached but oops Friede gets attached. So does Amethio. Contains main character death, obviously!

Ame wanting to thank Frie after realising just how much Frie's done for him... But he's at the point where he can't really express his thoughts or feelings properly, so he doesn't know how to get his gratitude across. He knows he'll never truly be able to repay Frie.

[Me]
Ame thinks back to writing his overly-long letter to his father, and wishes he could do that with Frie, too, but... he's too weak. Even typing something out on his phone would be a struggle.

[Me]
It hits Ame that he was so focused on his family and making sure they knew how he felt, that he neglected to do that with Frie. Even though Frie was, in many ways, more important to him.

Even though he loved Frie

[Me]
One day, during one of Frie's routine checkups, Ame decides he has to just... say something. Anything. Before he can't.

[Me]
Every day, Frie changes Ame's hospital gown for him, and every second day, he cleans Ame's body. Ame's unable to get out of bed to use the shower, but Frie wants to make sure he's clean and comfortable.

[Me]
So when Frie puts Ame's gown back on him, Ame uses that opportunity to hug Frie as tightly as he can.

Frie's hugged Ame, but Ame's never initiated a hug before. The hug doesn't have much strength behind it. Ame can't fully put his arms around Frie like Frie can do with him because the idiot is just that much bigger.

[Me]
Frie's confused and asks Ame if something's wrong, but Ame just gently kisses Frie, smiles as much as he can, and chokes out a very quiet "Thank you"

[Me]
Frie: For... What?
Ame: Everything. All of it.
Frie: But... I don't...?
Ame: Yes. You do.
Frie: ...

[Me]
Ame kisses Frie again, but this time only on the side of his neck. He's too tired to say much else. But there's one last thing...

I love you.

[Me]
Frie: Amethio...?
Ame: Even now, I... I still-

Frie can tell Ame's having trouble talking. His voice is shaking and it sounds almost distant. Frie very softly kisses Ame back, puts his arms right around him, and pulls Ame to his chest

[Me]
While gently stroking Ame's hair, Frie rests his chin on the top of Ame's head.

Yeah. I know. So do... So do I.
...
I love you too.

[Me]
Frie holds Ame like that until Ame eventually stops crying. He lays Ame back down in bed, not really wanting to let go.

Before Frie takes Ame's arms away, and tucks them under the sheets, he gives Ame another kiss... on the back of his hand

[Me]
Frie smiles at Ame, who's too exhausted to return it, but he knows Ame feels the same.

He stays by Ame's side until Ame falls asleep.

No matter how much his body has deteriorated and changed since he was hospitalised, Frie still finds Ame absolutely breathtakingly beautiful

[Me]
Frie then leaves the room... even though he wishes he could be with Ame longer
