Perhaps part of him doesn't want to be alone but also it's for the better he is.

I feel like his family (who in my mind are Gibeon and Spinel) wouldn't visit him and just dumped him in hospital so that they didn't have to deal with his deteriorating health themselves, so Ame feels abandoned because of that too

Also maybe Frie's the first person who actively tries to befriend Ame... Ame doesn't trust him at first and thinks Frie has ulterior motives (he doesn't lol) but over time starts opening up

Frie doesn't try to change his mind (after a few failed attempts of doing so) about life etc so instead he just listens and tries to be supportive

That's my thought too. So what's the point of trying to connect with others when his own family gave up on him and never visited him.

I feel like that would mess up with Frie too. Since he sees that Ame's state is getting worse and there is no one for him. And he is so young. And dealing with this alone.

Yeah Frie himself is barely coping because to him, it's so incredibly unfair that a person so young is going to die and he's fully aware that there's nothing he can do about it

To top it all off Ame's extremely isolated

His colleagues (Mollie, Orio and Murdock) keep reminding him that he needs to take a step back and that Frie tends to get in over his head when it comes to taking care of the younger terminally ill patients (maybe he had someone else die who he was looking after? Idk). Frie's too nice for this job

So Frie wants to at least talk to him so he doesn't feel as isolated. It's the least he can do.

That's his goal. He wants them to die knowing that at least someone out there cared about them, and he wants to try to alleviate some of their suffering (even though he knows deep down it doesn't work like that)

Random scenario: Frie keeps pestering Ame's family to come and visit, so one day Spi actually does. Except when they interact, Frie notices that Ame's reverted back to his original prickly and closed-off behaviour (he'd been slowly getting friendlier and more relaxed around Frie). Things very quickly start to go badly

Maybe Spi and Ame get into a fight while nobody's in the room with them and Frie comes in to find Ame crying and tells Spi to fuck off (but politely)

And Frie feels terrible because he was the one who insisted that Spi visited

I can see Ame start looking forward a little bit to their meetings and talks... the only good moments in his life.

I could see Spi being kind of influenced to stop giving a fuck about Ame by the family. And yeah they wouldn't exactly get along as a result. The meeting would be a disaster for Ame emotionally.

Yeah. Perhaps Spi wanted to visit earlier but never had the opportunity and Gibe encouraged him not to go. And Spi recently became an adult perhaps so he can go to places more easily if he can drive etc. So that's why he visited.

Tbf it takes Spi ages to realise he does actually care about Ame himself but then he goes "Wait hold on Father's kind of an ass" once he starts piecing things together

I think Gibeon is the type of man who'd have a caring side deep down, given how he's seemingly instructed the Explorers to all treat their Pokemon with unconditional love, so... To me that translates to something like this in an AU where Ame's his son and Gibe doesn't really know what he's doing
