FrieAme AU where Friede's a paediatrician and Amethio's a terminally ill inpatient. Friede's in charge of Amethio's care and keeps telling himself not to get attached but oops Friede gets attached. So does Amethio.
Contains main character death, obviously!
Thanks to my good friend for always contributing great ideas! <3
This is very specific but to me Gibe seems like the type who would use slightly outdated LGBT+ terms but not mean them in a negative way
Like he'd ask Ame if he's homosexual, not if he's gay, etc [Me] But this is also why Ame thinks Gibe wouldn't approve of him being attracted to men (Ame assumes Gibe's using it negatively)
"[Me] Gibe after discovering that Ame reads gay fiction: I must ask...
Ame: Y-Yes?
Gibe: Are you, by chance, homosexual?
Ame, thinking his dad's gonna disown him if he admits he likes men: UH"
"[Me] Ame: W-Why are you asking...?
Gibe: Well, I was curious and decided to look up the author of that book you were reading. It seems as though they exclusively publish things involving homosexual relationships, so it made me wonder...
Ame: ..........[Sweats nervously]"
"[Me] Ame: I... I don't know...
Gibe: Hm? What do you mean?
Ame: I just... I mean... I-I've only ever liked one person, so... I haven't really... figured it out...
Gibe: And... is that person a man?
Ame: ......."
"[Me] Gibe doesn't understand why Ame's being so evasive and secretive. Surely he's figured out by now that Gibe and Luci were in a relationship, and thus Gibe himself fancies men.
Gibe's about to tell Ame to stop being stupid and think for a second, but he manages to catch himself in time and simply keeps his mouth shut"
"[Me] Ame: T-They are, but... I... I don't think you can really judge it based on one person... I could always fall in love with someone else in the future, and that person could be a woman, so...
Gibe: So you're saying you'll find someone new to fall in love with within the next few months while you're in hospital?
Ame: ..." [Me] Gibe's surprised Ame's still thinking about any kind of future. Does he seriously believe he'll get the chance to fall in love with someone else? He sees the same people every day, and if he was going to have a silly teenage crush on one of the nurses, he most likely would have done so by now [Me] Ame: Do I... have to know? I have no idea if I'm gay or what. All I know is that the person I like is a man. That's it. Why does it matter to you?
"[Me] Gibe: I thought the entire point of me being here was to ask you questions and to get to know more about you. Was I mistaken?
Ame: ...You're not, but...
Gibe: [Sigh]
Ame flinches. For some reason, he looks upset. Gibe can't work out why"
"[Me] Gibe: Why are you assuming that I would have an issue with you being homosexual?
Ame: ...Why wouldn't I?
Gibe: Ah. I suppose you may be misremembering things... You were rather young, after all... But the--
Ame: I'm fully aware that you were sleeping with a man during your affair, actually. I don't need reminding.
Gibe: ..."
"[Me] Gibe: So then what on Earth makes you think I would be bothered?
Ame: ...Because you're making it sound like it does...
Gibe: In what way? I have not once insulted you, nor have I--
Ame: YES YOU HAVE!" [Me] Gibe's slightly taken aback by Ame raising his voice. Ame, who had sat forward somewhat in order to assert himself, immediately looks like he regrets it, as he flops back against his pillows and turns away
"[Me] Gibe: I was referring to this conversation specifically
Ame: I know. So was I.
Gibe: ...How so? Do you consider me asking you personal questions to be insulting?"
"[Me] Ame doesn't reply.
Gibe sighs again. He can't figure out what, exactly, he's said that was insulting.
Gibe: If you do not wish to discuss this, then you should properly say so.
Ame: ...That's not it"
"[Me] Ame: I... I just... You've been mocking me the entire time... From the beginning...
Gibe: By... asking you if you're homosexual? How is that insulting you?
Ame falls silent again" [Me] Gibe's completely confused. He's not doing this on purpose. Ame even admitted that he has feelings for a man, so that's not the problem
"[Me] Gibe: Amethio. If you don't tell me, how am I supposed to know?
Ame: [Flinches]
Gibe: I understand that you do not view yourself as such, but if you did, I would not have any issue with you being homosexual--
Ame: Then why do you keep calling me that?"
"[Me] Gibe: Excuse me?
Ame: You insist you're not insulting me, yet all you're doing is talking like it's a bad thing...
Gibe: You're not making any sense
Ame: ...Do you really not... get it...?" [Me] Gibe's had enough. He knows if he stays any longer, he'll just get unnecessarily mad at Ame, and he's promised himself he'd no longer do that...
"[Me] But just as Gibe's about to tell Ame that he'll be on his way, Ame, who still has his back turned to Gibe, takes a deep breath
Ame: Do you seriously not understand that I don't like you using the word ""homosexual""?
And Gibe just... stares at him"
"[Me] Was there something wrong with the word? That's what Gibe's always called himself. Luci first used it to describe his own sexuality, so Gibe simply adopted the same term.
As far as Gibe was aware, it was appropriate. He'd never heard anyone use it as an insult. So why did it make Ame so uncomfortable?"
"[Me] Gibe: Why do you dislike the word?
Ame: BECAUSE IT'S DEROGATORY, OKAY?!
Gibe: ...........
Gibe: Since...... Since when?" [Me] Ame: .......Huh?
"[Me] Ame slowly sits up a bit and rolls over, finally facing Gibe again. He's on the verge of tears
Ame: What... What do you mean?
Gibe: Since when is ""homosexual"" considered to be derogatory?
Ame: ........"
"[Me] Ame's eyes widen in surprise
Ame: I... I've always heard it being used negatively... Like, at school - not directed at me, but at other people - and online... So... So I thought you... you were u-using that word because you... you wanted to insult me..."
"[Me] It's Gibe's turn to be surprised.
He can tell Ame's being serious, and Gibe does indeed believe him. But he genuinely was unaware the usage had shifted..."
"[Me] Gibe: In that case, what would you call a man who is attracted to other men?
Ame: ...I can't speak for everyone, but... F-From what I've read about online and in books and stuff... T-They tend to just... call themselves ""gay""..." [Me] Gibe tenses slightly. To him, that's the word that was thrown around derogatorily in high school. While Gibe, obviously, kept his own sexuality a secret, bullying of those who identified as... "different" in any way was rather common. Despite Gibe's best efforts to stop such things from occurring.
"[Me] Gibe: Hm. I believe the language surrounding this has changed in the past few decades, then. Of course, I have never exactly spoken about it to anyone, but... It seems things have flipped
Ame: ...Y-You mean..
Ame, who's clearly running out of energy, lays back down again. But this time, he doesn't turn away"
"[Me] Ame: T-Then, you wouldn't call yourself ""gay"", Father?
Gibe: Never."
"[Me] Ame leans back and closes his eyes.
Ame: Then that makes this easy. I feel the same way about being called ""homosexual"". Regardless of whether or not it actually applies to me.
Gibe: ...Right."
"[Me] Silence falls between them. Gibe knows it's the end of the conversation. Not that he really wants to continue it.
Ame must understand that Gibe didn't mean to insult him, surely. He must now realise that he had been using the word in an outdated fashion..." [Me] Gibe: ...I genuinely was unaware that you viewed the word in a negative light. It was not my intention to insult you. I know you may find it difficult to believe, but when it comes to this in particular... I would never think less of somebody for it. I am fully aware it is beyond one's control
"[Me] Ame: ...Yeah. I... I also... had no idea...
Ame keeps his eyes shut as he talks. He looks exhausted.
Ame: I didn't even think that... there would've been different words used in the past... I-It never occurred to me... So...
Gibe: That's enough
Ame: [Flinches]
Gibe: It's time I leave. You clearly need to rest, regardless"
"[Me] Ame nods, but doesn't say anything.
Gibe stands up and heads to the door. While he has his hand on the door handle, he hears Ame quietly from the bed
Ame: Father?
Gibe: What?
Ame: ...I'm sorry...
Gibe pauses. He wasn't expecting an apology. Why was Ame apologising, anyway?"
"[Me] Gibe: What on Earth for? There's no need for you to apologise.
Gibe doesn't give Ame a chance to explain himself before he leaves and shuts the door behind him.
Of course Ame wouldn't have considered the fact that language evolves and changes over time. Why would he? He was only sixteen..." [Me] Both Gibe and Ame going "Oh I hadn't thought about that :|" and realising they need to be careful with what words they use around each other due to the generation gap...
