Modern-day hospital AU featuring doctor Friede and terminally ill patient Amethio. WIP.
Amethio Forscher
Age: 15
Birthday: 2/14
Family: Gibeon (Grandfather), Maria (Mother, died when Amethio was eight), Spinel (Older brother), Tanzan (Grandmother, divorced Gibeon when Amethio was five, died when Amethio was eight), Crave (Father, estranged from the family after Maria's death), Hamber (Family butler), Gibeon's parents (Both deceased)
Friede's newest patient, who's recently been diagnosed with a rare terminal illness. Cynical and snarky on the surface, but underneath is hiding an abyss of sorrow and loneliness. Amethio struggles to adjust to life in hospital, and is initially very dismissive of Friede. However, he slowly starts to open up to his eccentric doctor.
- Abusive Parents: Gibeon always blames Amethio for everything, and constantly berates him for every single thing he does (or doesn't do). Gibeon has a deep hatred for Amethio, and insults Amethio at every possible opportunity. This continues even after Amethio is diagnosed with his terminal illness, and even after Amethio's Attempted Suicide. It takes Gibeon's own Jerkass Realization, which is triggered by Amethio splashing water on him, for Gibeon to stop being abusive towards his dying grandson.
- Adaptational Angst Upgrade: While he's going through quite a bit of angst in canon with not being able to capture the black Rayquaza, most of what happens to Amethio in this AU is stuff that a kids' show would never touch upon. And then there's the terminal illness.
- Ambiguous Syntax: Tries to be as vague as possible about things that upset him so that people leave him alone. Subverted with Friede, however, in that Amethio just tends to tell him things rather... bluntly.
- Angry Cheek Puff: Does this unintentionally when he's mad. Friede thinks it's adorable.
- Anxiety Dreams: Has several medical-related ones, as well as dreams about being abandoned by his parents.
- Apologizes a Lot: To Gibeon, on the off chance that it'll make his grandfather less angry. It never works.
- Appearance Angst: Hates how he looks from head-to-toe. He's convinced he's ugly and wishes he was more masculine, and is annoyed that he doesn't look any more mature at the age of 15 than he did when he was 12 (which is due in part to his illness). His intense self-hatred of his looks stems from Spinel constantly telling him he's ugly, unclean and disgusting.
- Armor-Piercing Response: Frequently. "My mother can't exactly visit me considering she's... well. She's dead." and "I have no intention of forgiving the man who seduced my grandfather into an affair. And yes, I do remember. All of it. How could I possibly forget seeing you two in bed? That was my grandmother's bed. She should have been sleeping there. Not you." are two examples.
- Archnemesis Granddad: Considers his grandfather Gibeon to be his greatest enemy in life. Even after Gibeon's Jerkass Realization and subsequent apology, Amethio still dislikes Gibeon more than he dislikes anybody else.
- Asleep in Class: Amethio falling asleep in class a couple of times is one of the very first signs he's ill.
- Athletically Challenged: Even before he was sick, he was always useless at sports and often came last in gym.
- Attempted Suicide: He tries to strangle himself after having a massive breakdown due to being unable to take care of himself and having to rely on others for personal care. Ends up being an Interrupted Suicide thanks to Friede intervening.
- The B Grade: Freaked out when he got a less-than-perfect grade on an important test, as he couldn't figure out why he did so poorly despite studying so hard. Turns out it's because he's very unwell.
- Berserk Button: Has several, such as being touched without permission, people suddenly changing their minds at the last second, being called "cute", people assuming he's innocent and naive, amongst others. Friede keeps accidentally pushing them.
- Big "NO!": Has a few of these. Mostly when Friede tells him he needs to accept that he needs help with personal care.
- Birthday Hater: Partially because it's on Valentine's Day, but also because he hasn't celebrated it since before his mother died, so he's rather bitter about it.
- Blood from the Mouth: Throws up blood on a few occasions due to his illness. The first time he does it, he panics.
- Bookworm: When he has the energy, he spends a lot of his days in hospital reading.
- Born Unlucky: Absolutely nothing in his life goes right for him. Except for meeting Friede.
- Break the Cutie: The entirety of the story is breaking Amethio. Over and over and over again.
- Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting: Determined to do this, and is frustrated that the universe hasn't given him the opportunity to do so since he'll die before he's able to become a parent.
- Broken Bird: Thanks to all the abuse and trauma he's suffered throughout his life.
- Broken Tears: Multiple times, but only in front of Friede — and only when he's emotionally exhausted to the point that he can't hide his tears any longer. Later on, he cries in front of Gibeon and Spinel too, although at that point he doesn't have very good control over his emotions.
- Brutal Honesty: Frequently to Friede about how he feels about his life, and about how much he hates being in hospital. He calls out Friede's behaviour a lot, too.
- Bullied into Depression: While Gibeon's emotional abuse certainly did its damage, the one to bully him to the point of very seriously considering suicide was Spinel.
- Butt-Monkey: Spends most of his life getting beat down by everyone around him. Spinel in particular used him as a punching bag for years.
- Cannot Tell a Lie: Finds it very hard to lie, and as a result, he's terrible at it.
- Collapsed Mid-Speech: Happened to him in school during an assembly. He was promptly taken to the infirmary, and the school nurse decided to call an ambulance from there.
- Covert Pervert: More perverted than he lets on due to his age and hormones. He's rather annoyed that he thinks this way.
- The Cynic: Due to being recently diagnosed with a terminal illness at the age of fifteen, mostly.
- Cynicism Catalyst: Being diagnosed with a rare terminal illness and hospitalised indefinitely has made him very cynical and snarky.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Full of abuse and neglect at the hands of Gibeon and Spinel. He's also severely affected by his grandparents' divorce and his mother's sudden death, the latter of which resulted in being abandoned by his father.
- The Darkness Before Death: Loses the ability to see during the last hours of his life, during which he helplessly seeks out comfort from Friede.
- Deadpan Snarker: Is always snarky around Friede, and is rather surprised when Friede is snarky back to him. (He's actually a Stepford Snarker.)
- Delayed Diagnosis: The first time Amethio finally saw a doctor (which took quite a while to happen due to Gibeon being convinced Amethio was faking his symptoms), he was told there was probably something wrong with him, but they weren't sure what. When Amethio was properly hospitalised the first time, nobody could find what was wrong with him then, either, and when he was hospitalised a second time, it took over a week for the doctor he was assigned to there to diagnose him. However, he's repeatedly told that even if he was diagnosed earlier, his illness would still be terminal.
- Delicate and Sickly: By virtue of being terminally ill. He hates that he's like this, and wishes he was stronger both mentally and physically.
- Despair Event Horizon: Once he stops being able to take care of himself and can't walk anymore. While he was already not coping well with his terminal diagnosis, this is the point that makes him truly realise that his body's deteriorating and that he's going to die. This leads to his Attempted Suicide.
- Desperately Craves Affection: Amethio, despite how much he tries to deny it, just wants somebody to love him for who he is. This is ultimately a large reason why he ends up falling in love with Friede.
- Driven to Suicide:
-* Almost, in the past. Thanks to Spinel's bullying and Spinel constantly telling Amethio that he should kill himself because it would make everyone happier.
-* He attempts suicide at one point during the actual story once he's unable to take care of himself and has to rely on others for help with personal care. Becomes a case of Interrupted Suicide.
- Don't Look At Me: Says this frequently when his body does embarrassing things in front of others, such as when he cries or is unable to control his bodily functions.
- Don't You Dare Pity Me!: His general attitude about his terminal illness. He doesn't think he deserves pity.
- Door Slam of Rage: Does this early on after shoving Friede out of his hospital room.
- Easily Embarrassed Youngster: Was very shy as a kid. He's not much better as a teenager, and finds it highly shameful having Friede help him with any amount of personal care.
- The Eeyore: When he's initially transferred to the Saint Asagi Children's Hospital, he makes it a point to make everyone around him as miserable as he is. Friede is able to slowly improve his mood over time — but only only to a certain extent. Once he's weak enough, however, he no longer has the energy to be miserable.
- Embarrassing Hospital Gown: How he feels about wearing it initially. Eventually, he gets used to it, but he never grows comfortable wearing it.
- Emotional Regression: Due to the overwhelming stress of being terminally ill.
- Erotic Dream: Has couple about Friede. Although they're only vaguely erotic, Amethio's not amused with himself in the slightest.
- Extremely Protective Child: Towards his mother Maria. The usually shy Amethio even stood up for her and tried to protect her against Gibeon during one of their heated arguments. Unfortunately for Amethio, this just resulted in Gibeon beating him.
- Face Death with Despair: Is extremely scared of dying, and as time goes on, it terrifies him more and more. This fear of death eventually causes a severe mental breakdown.
- Fate Worse than Death: Is convinced that being bedridden, unable to communicate yet being fully aware of what's happening around him will be worse than actually dying.
- Fear of Thunder: Which Friede finds out when Amethio spends a public holiday weekend at his apartment.
- Feigning Healthiness: Did this for as long as possible, and even right up until he was given his terminal diagnosis, so that Gibeon wouldn't punish him. Gibeon thought Amethio was lying whenever he said he felt unwell and forced Amethio to attend school no matter how much Amethio begged his grandfather to let him stay home.
- Go Mad from the Isolation: Even though he's a loner, he absolutely hates having nobody around in hospital. Once he becomes bedridden, this gets to him even more. Friede can only visit him a couple of times a day, too.
- Guilt Complex: Blames himself for his family falling apart, even though he was only five when he discovered that his grandfather was having an affair.
- Hates Being Touched: Due to being beaten by Gibeon a couple of times and repeatedly physically abused by Spinel.
- Height Angst: Quite annoyed at how short he ended up being. Turns out it's because of his illness.
- Hormone-Addled Teenager: Much to his disgust — he blames Friede for it entirely. He tries his best to ignore his hormones.
- I Am Not Pretty: Is convinced he's ugly and disgusting because of Spinel constantly insulting his appearance. He doesn't believe Friede at all when Friede tells Amethio he thinks he's beautiful.
- Imagined Innuendo: Does this frequently, especially with Friede, and is always annoyed at himself that his mind goes to such vulgar places.
- The Insomniac: Finds it very hard to sleep in hospital. Sleeping pills initially help, but they give him severe migraines, so he has to stop them.
- Kick the Dog: Gets repeatedly kicked (both metaphorically and literally) by both Gibeon and Spinel for most of his life.
- Likes Older Men: Amethio likes Friede. Friede's the first person he's ever loved, so he's not sure if this is the case, but Spinel teases Amethio about liking older men when he figures out Amethio's feelings for his hot doctor.
- Lonely Rich Kid:
-* Has no friends. Liko, Roy and Dot think they've managed to befriend him, but Amethio has no idea if he considers them friends or not.
-* Becomes friends with Pago, a kid who hangs around the hospital, only for that friendship to end when Amethio discovers that Lucius, Pago's adoptive father, is the man who ruined his life. Eventually, Amethio learns to accept that Pago has nothing to do with any of Lucius's actions, but he still finds himself unable to open up to Pago anymore.
- Major Injury Underreaction: He's so used to hiding his pain to avoid punishment that when he has severe stomach pain, he acts like nothing's wrong. This causes him to require an emergency surgical procedure, which could have been avoided if he'd told Friede about the pain.
- Mercy Kill Arrangement: Wants to invoke this, and even researches the topic himself, but is exasperated to find that the laws of the country he lives in don't allow euthanasia, even if the person has a terminal illness.
- Mood-Swinger: While already not exactly emotionally stable, he becomes this for a period of time because of some medication Friede prescribes him, which causes him to randomly act physically violent out of frustration.
- Morning Routine: Has a lot of trouble adjusting to the hospital's much more lax morning routine, and he absolutely hates not being able to do the tasks himself once he becomes unable to handle his own personal care.
- Neat Freak: Is obsessed with staying clean and tidy even when he's severely ill. Turns out it's due to Spinel convincing him he's filthy and disgusting.
- No-Respect Guy: He's extremely rude to the hospital staff at first, until Friede manages to win him over.
- Obsessed with Perfect Attendance: Otherwise he'd be punished for missing school, even if he was sick.
- Obsessively Organized: If Gibeon thought Amethio was disorganised or behind in his schoolwork at all, he'd be severely punished.
- Parental Neglect: If Gibeon's not emotionally abusing Amethio, he's ignoring him.
- The Patient Has Left the Building: Tried to run away from the first place he was hospitalised at, although he didn't get very far before being caught.
- Peaceful in Death: What those around him believe when he dies. Seeing how much he suffered over the past year and a half made everyone, in some ways, relieved when he finally lets go. Friede in particular hopes that Amethio is at last able to rest — a sentiment shared by Amethio's family.
- The Perfectionist: Found himself being forced to be this due to hoping to avoid punishment from Gibeon.
- Prone to Tears: During the last couple of months of his life, when he's unable to control his emotions very well.
- The Resenter: Hates Gibeon for betraying his family by having an affair with Lucius.
- Sanity Slippage: While he was already emotionally unstable, his mental health gets worse and worse following his hospitalisation and his body deteriorating, leading to an Attempted Suicide.
- Secret Diary: Friede suggests that Amethio keep one on his phone so that he can write down his thoughts and maybe make some sense of them. Amethio does so, and ends up finding it somewhat useful. After Amethio's death, Friede reads his diary, and realises that he severely underestimated just how much Amethio cared for him.
- Security Blanket: Friede buys Amethio a small stuffed owl to try and help calm him down. The owl ends up becoming this for Amethio.
- Shameful Strip: Does not like having to take off his hospital gown in front of others. Even once he gets more comfortable being around Friede, he hates showing Friede his body, despite knowing there's nothing sexual about the situation.
- Shower Shy: Is very self-conscious about his body and, as a result, he's extremely shy and anxious when Friede has to help him shower/bathe. Even after Amethio accepts that he needs the assistance, he never quite overcomes his shyness.
- Shy Bladder: It becomes a problem when he starts needing help with toileting.
- Significant Birthdate: His birthday is Valentine's Day. He's well aware of the irony that an unloved child like him is born on a day that celebrates love.
- Sour Outside, Sad Inside: His constant anger and irritability masks the abyss of sadness he truly feels.
- Still Sucks Thumb: Took many years to break this habit as a child. He reverts back to doing it not too long after being hospitalised due to his inability to cope with the stressful situation.
- Stress Vomit: In addition to throwing up a lot due to his illness, he does it because of stress, too.
- Successful Sibling Syndrome: Is extremely jealous of how smart and talented Spinel is and wishes he was more like his brother than he wants to admit.
- Suicide for Others' Happiness: Believed this would happen when he was almost Driven to Suicide by Spinel in the past.
- Super Gullible: As a child, he tended to believe everything he was told. Spinel took advantage of this, so Amethio has some rather odd beliefs about how certain things work.
- Tantrum Throwing: Once his mental state starts to decline and he struggles to control his emotions, he becomes prone to tantrums. Friede internally notes that he's becoming similar to some of the younger patients — a revelation that scares him.
- Tender Tears: Multiple times, particularly once he gets weaker physically and exhausted mentally.
- Too Unhappy to Be Hungry: Frequently skips meals. Friede ends up asking Murdock, the dietician, for help. Friede initially wonders if it's because of Amethio's illness, but it turns out it's actually because he's rather depressed.
- Tragic Dream: Wants to get married and start his own family so that Gibeon can look at Amethio and be jealous of the kind of husband/father Amethio is. Being diagnosed with a terminal illness at the age of fifteen, Amethio knows there's no hope of him ever fulfilling this wish.
- Tragic Keepsake: Amethio's gloves are actually his mother's. After she died, Spinel and Amethio were allowed to choose something of hers to bring home with them. Amethio was too young to really know what he wanted, but he decided on the gloves, as he remembered just how elegant his mother used to look while wearing them.
- Trauma Conga Line: Walks in on his grandfather Gibeon having an affair with another man (Lucius), Gibeon then starts being emotionally abusive (as well as occasionally physically abusive), his grandparents get divorced because Amethio spoke up about said affair, his older brother Spinel starts physically abusing him (due to not coping with the stress surrounding him), his mother Maria dies a couple of years later and Spinel's abuse gets increasingly worse as a result. Once Amethio enters high school, Gibeon becomes harsher and harsher, and Amethio starts having health issues that go ignored until he collapses a few too many times at school and is hospitalised. On his second hospitalisation, he's diagnosed with a rare terminal illness and has probably less than two years to live.
- Troubled Fetal Position: Does this frequently towards the end of his life when he's unable to handle things.
- Trying Not to Cry: Does this constantly, as he sees crying as being immature and weak. However, as time goes on, he's less and less able to control his emotions and cries quite easily. But he does his best to avoid crying in front of his family even when he's nearing the end of his life.
- Tsundere: Is usually nagging Friede about something, but once he begins to trust Friede more, Amethio finds himself getting somewhat flustered around him.
- The Un-Favorite: Gibeon repeatedly reminds him that he's this. Part of Amethio agrees and believes he is the cause of all of his grandfather's problems, while another part of himself feels as though he didn't actually do anything to warrant Gibeon's hatred.
- Valentine's Day Vitriol: Partly because he thinks love is a joke, and partially because it's his birthday.
- "Well Done, Son" Guy: More than anything else, Amethio wants his grandfather to be proud of him after he grows up to be a successful adult. And, ultimately, he wants Gibeon to be jealous of him.
- Your Days Are Numbered: Is given, at most, two years to live. He lasts about a year and a half before he dies.
