FrieAme Hospital AU Tropes

Modern-day hospital AU featuring doctor Friede and terminally ill patient Amethio. WIP.

Friede Valiente

Age: 27
Birthday: 8/23
Family: Father (Deceased; died when Friede was thirteen), Mother (Walked out when Friede was five), the Fiala family Lucca & Alex (Adoptive parents), Liko (Adoptive sister) and their other relatives

Pediatrician at the Saint Asagi Children's Hospital. Always tries his best to make his young patients as happy as possible despite their usually bleak situations, but struggles to remain happy himself. Quickly becomes attached to his newest patient Amethio.

  • The Alcoholic: He went through a period of heavy drinking in his late teens. He refuses to drink now as a result.

  • Alcoholic Parent: His father was a severe alcoholic, and Friede was often ignored by him.
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: Swears he sleeps better anywhere but his bedroom, including upright in a chair.
  • The Antinihilist: Tries to be this in order to keep himself able to do his job, but isn't always successful due to being surrounded by so much death.
  • Analogy Backfire: Really bad at analogies, as noted by Amethio.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Forces himself to act like this. He eventually can't keep fooling himself, as Amethio's deteriorating health starts to severely stress him out.
  • Boys Like Creepy Critters: Used to collect bugs. Amethio finds this disgusting.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Many people tell him he doesn't seem like a doctor because of his kind, quirky personality. But he's very smart and knows an awful lot about pediatrics.
  • But I Read a Book About It: He admits that he's fallen victim to this in the past with his previous patients, and tries to be flexible with his way of approaching things, as both people and their health problems are extremely unpredictable.
  • Can't Tie His Tie: Amethio comments that Friede's tie is always loose, and Friede has to admit to Amethio that it's because he can't actually tie it. Amethio isn't impressed.
  • Child Prodigy: He's been extremely knowledgeable about pediatric medicine from a young age, and excelled in biology in school.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Amethio calls him out for his obsession with saving people. Friede, after some self-reflection, ends up admitting to Amethio that he never saw it that way, but Amethio's right, and it stems from Friede's father killing himself when Friede was young, and Friede blaming himself for not being able to help his dad in any way.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Has quite a few admirers amongst the mothers who visit their children that are looked after by him. Amethio is vaguely amused by this.
  • Commitment Issues: Ends up realising he has these, due to his mother leaving when he was very young and his father being Driven to Suicide when he was a teenager. Working in an environment where a lot of his patients die has also done nothing but help him convince himself that everybody will leave him.
  • Cool Bike: Has a cool motorbike. It's bright orange with teal stripes.
  • Cool Shades: Wears these when not at work.
  • Cunning Linguist: Speaks multiple languages. Amethio witnesses him switch to foreign languages a few times with certain patients' families, and is always impressed.
  • The Defroster: Intentionally with Amethio, although he's like this with all of his patients. Amethio just takes a bit more time to melt than the younger kids.
  • Determinator: Does a lot of his own research on Amethio's illness in a desperate search for some kind of cure (even though he knows it's most likely impossible). Becomes obsessed with contacting experts to see if there's any chance somebody out there can help Amethio to the point that he gets sick from overworking himself.
  • Ditzy Genius: He's smart, confident and sociable, yet also an airhead. Amethio figures he's Obfuscating Stupidity to some extent, but in reality, Friede really does space out and forget things a lot.
  • Encyclopaedic Knowledge: When it comes to pediatrics, thanks to his intelligence and reliable memory.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: While he would rather not hate people, he soon develops a strong loathing for Gibeon after learning about how he treats Amethio. Eventually eases this opinion somewhat following Gibeon's Jerkass Realization, and is extremely relieved that Gibeon is willing to admit his mistakes and attempting to make amends with his grandsons.
  • Experienced Protagonist: He's been a pediatrician for quite some time.
  • Flipping the Bird: Does this behind Gibeon's back multiple times. Amethio is aghast and is always terrified that Gibeon will catch Friede doing it and get Friede into trouble.
  • Forgets to Eat: Usually too caught up in his work to remember to eat.
  • Friend to All Children: Sees it as being part of the job description, but it's also his natural personality.
  • Fun Personified: Tries to be this for his patients, who are children, by always being happy-go-lucky and by acting extremely enthusiastic. It doesn't work on Amethio.
  • Genius Ditz: Shows shades of this, as he's often rather ditzy socially and seems to struggle interacting with people. Amethio thinks he invokes this on purpose.
  • Good with Numbers: Very quick at mathematics, which sometimes comes in handy with his job.
  • The Grim Reaper: Spinel makes a comment that Friede's job is essentially this. Friede gets angry at Spinel for being insensitive, but the more he thinks about it, the more Friede realises that Spinel's actually right. After all, Friede is pretty much guiding people towards death, even if he does try and delay it as much as possible.
  • Happily Adopted: While he took many years to adjust to his sudden change in family situation, Friede feels this way about his mentor Lucca and her husband Alex taking him in.
  • Heroic Fatigue: While trying desperately to search for a cure for Amethio's illness, he overworks himself to the point of making himself sick, and has to take off several days of work which Friede never usually does.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He's good at hiding it, but ultimately, Friede's not very fond of who he is as a person.
  • Hospital Hottie: He's very handsome... at least according to Amethio (and several of the mothers of his other patients).
  • I Thought Everyone Could Do That: Learns a lot about himself and his talents when Amethio frequently has to explain to him that most people are incapable of doing such things.
  • Improbable Age: Realistically, he's too young to be an experienced pediatrician by a few years.
  • Men Can't Keep House: His apartment is always very messy. His excuse is that he doesn't have the time to clean it.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Is very careful to avoid this, following people misinterpreting his closeness with his young patients, particularly Liz. Friede refuses to tell Amethio what happened, either, considering Amethio himself is still young, and Friede is worried it might be too upsetting.
  • Nice Guy: Most people think he's too nice. Amethio feels as though Friede's forcing himself to be a Nice Guy, and Friede ends up admitting that Amethio is right.
  • Note to Self: Says and thinks this a lot. It's his way of actually logging things in his brain that he needs to remember.
  • Older Than They Look: Amethio's surprised when Friede says he's in his late 20s Amethio thought he was in his early 20s.
  • Papa Wolf: With the kids at the Saint Asagi Children's Hospital. He'll protect any of his patients from their families if he has to.
  • Parental Abandonment: Friede's mother walked out on him and his father when Friede was little.
  • Parental Neglect: His father was an alcoholic who never paid any attention to Friede and killed himself when Friede was a teenager.
  • Quirky Doctor: Does not fit any doctor stereotypes, which is frequently pointed out to him, and many people find him a bit strange. He's very good at his job, however.
  • Real Men Can Cook: He had to learn at an early age how to fend for himself, which led to him being a good cook.
  • Sanity Slippage: Being Amethio's doctor proves to be much harder than he ever could have imagined and slowly wears away at him.
  • Saying Too Much: Has a bad habit of doing this if he's not careful, and has gotten reprimanded several times in the past.
  • Secret-Keeper: Ends up being this for a lot of Amethio's secrets and traumas. While Amethio does eventually tell Gibeon and Spinel about some things, there are certain events in his life and particular feelings that he only ever divulges to Friede.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Tends to be underestimated and dismissed because he doesn't fit any typical doctor stereotypes. Despite this, he's extremely intelligent.
  • Stepford Smiler: Barely, at some points, due to the nature of his job and him having to constantly deal with children in distressing situations. He manages to keep his composure until Amethio dies. After that, he stops smiling for quite some time.
  • Sweet Tooth: While he will happy eat anything sweet, he loves ice cream the most. It's his comfort food.
  • Team Dad: Of the Saint Asagi Children's Hospital, due to his natural leadership skills and outgoing personality.
  • Think Unsexy Thoughts: Attempts to do this whenever he finds himself thinking of Amethio in any kind of romantic or vaguely sexual way, as he's fully aware that he should not be viewing a teenager like that. It often works, but not always.
  • Unaffected by Spice: Can handle anything spicy.
  • Unexpected Virgin: Amethio is surprised to learn that Friede has no sexual experience, given how outgoing and attractive he is. Friede's explanation is that he's too insecure to ask anyone to sleep with him which Amethio has trouble believing.
  • Unreliable Narrator: A lot of his interpretations and theories about Amethio are rather inaccurate. He's even less reliable when it comes to describing Gibeon.
