[Reki, Langa, and Miya's karuta beef]
The title was shown with the picture of the skatepark we knew. There were two cats under the ramp, so they would be "cat" in the title.
Reki said he had to take care of his sisters all day Saturday. On Sunday, he could finally skate and met Langa and Miya in the park.
Reki: I can be back to my
best place, skate park!!
Langa: No, it should be
favorite.
Reki enthusiastically shouted with a mixture of Japanese and English words, so it's a little hard to understand. Please refer to:
the preview with sub by Aniplex USA
But suddenly there was a heavy rain. It was so cute to see Langa and Miya sitting under the ramp to get out of the rain!
Reki stood stunned and drenched in the rain. Langa held out his hand to check the rain.
Miya: Langa, you have learned to forecast the weather.
Langa: This rain... it won't stop for a while!
Miya: Oh, you really are an Okinawan local now!
They hurried to the Kyan house to take shelter from the rain. It was cute how Langa carried the board in his light purple long-sleeved shirt, holding it so it wouldn't get wet! He takes good care of it! Reki also held his board under his shirts. Miya also had a board held in front of him, but it was outside of his clothes. He was wearing shorts with suspenders, so he couldn't put it in his shirt.
Miya: This is the first time for me to enter a (friend's) house other than Taka-chan's...
Miya said to himself, hesitating to go to the house. Langa went in without hesitation. Reki looked at Miya from inside and grinned.
Reki: Haha, Miya is much quieter than usual! (In Japanese proverbs, someone's unusual quietness is sometimes compared to a "borrowed cat". Here, Reki compared Miya to a cat in this way.)
Masae came to
genkan and encouraged Miya to come in.
Masae: Oh, here's a cute new little friend of Reki! Welcome! Hey, you're all soaking wet, why don't you take a bath soon?
Miya: Ah, you're Reki's mother. I thought you were his older sister (with a polite smile like a politician).
Masae: Oh boy, no kidding! (What Masae slapped was Reki's back. Poor son...)
The three boys took a bath. The bath scene showed only the bathroom floor, duck, turtle, and shark toys, and a soap bar.
Miya: This T-shirt (onigiri picture, papaya letter, pink one) is too big for me.
Reki: Then you want to wear my sister's T-shirt?
Miya: No thanks!!
Miya took a skate magazine (or book, catalog, whatever) from Reki's bookshelf. He turned the pages.
Miya: I have this board.
Reki: Seriously? It's the limited edition of an American model! Hey, please show me the board next time!
Reki said, his eyes were shining. A white box on the other side of the shelf fell out. Blank
karuta cards came out of it.
Miya: Oh,
Karuta? But it seems like they're almost blank.
Reki: Ah... this is the set of
karuta we can make ourselves. I got bored and didn't make it.
Langa:
Karuta... I have never seen this before... I want to try to play...!
Reki: Okay! How about you, Miya? Do you want to play?
Miya: I-If you want, I think I can have time to play with you?
Reki: Haha! Okay, let's make and play karuta together!
(If you want to know about
karuta, please refer to:
Wikipedia)
It seemed that each of the three of them wrote and drew the
karuta. There were a variety of phrases and images, too many to see! I will briefly describe the ones I could remember something.
Miya: << Slime-kun, who is always so close and never wins. >>
Reki: What the hell did you say!?
Miya: Huh? I didn't say it was about Reki!
Reki: Get your revenge! I'll write you up like this! << Nya-nya-nya, with a big attitude but small stature. >>
Miya: My height will be on the rise from now on!
Miya said this with the ears and tail of the black cat. SO CUTE.
Reki: << Miya can't get along with Sketchy forever. >>
Miya: It's the same for you!!
And then Reki and Miya lay on Reki's bed in his room and had a little fight!?!? (No sexual intentions, of course.)
Langa wrote and drew cards at his own pace, and when he finished, he smiled with satisfaction. Lovely!
<< The Japanese breads are too small. I'm starving. >> (Langa's
karuta)
<< I will melt. It's too hot, summer in Japan. >> (Langa's
karuta)
<< I turned on the sound of the wheels of the board, but it was a suitcase. >>
<< Thanks to the Love Hotel Guy, I was able to remember what was important. >> (Seemed like Reki's
karuta)
<< Next time, I will sure to beat you, Adam! >> (Seemed like Reki's
karuta)
When they laid out the finished
karuta and sat, Langa looked horrified and said, "It's coming...!" and he braced himself. Then the Kyan twins, Nanaka and Chihiro, crashed into Reki's room.
In ep. 2 of the S1, Langa had a look of fear on his face at the twins; the undefeated Snow in S1 fears neither the S Legends nor the King, only the Kyan twins, as far as the human being.
Nanaka, the older and more active one, clung to Miya, and Chihiro, the younger and more modest one, clung to Langa. Maybe that's the difference in the twins' preferences? Older sister Koyomi came to Reki’s room as well.
Koyomi: Oh! Here's (such a famous) Chinen-kun! You look more handsome than on the photos!
Miya: Hello, nice to see you. You're Reki's little sister, right? (Again, smiling like a politician. But there were Nanaka on his back).
Koyomi: Wow, it's
karuta game! Looks fun! I’m in!
Koyomi talked to Miya like a fangirl at first, but then her desire to play
karuta came to the fore. I think it was very good, with the honesty typical of elementary school students. They started playing with teams of Reki-Langa and Miya-Koyomi.
Reki: We'll win for sure!
Langa: Of course we will!
They put their fists together like we saw in the trailer.
Langa: << I want to eat soda-flavored ice cream. >>
Koyomi quickly took the first
karuta card in an authentic style. Her eyes were shining white, not like the rainbow-colored eyes of Langa in the zone, but she looked magnificent.
Reki: Ah, yes, I remember... she was the second place winner in the
Chounaikai (= neighborhood community association)
karuta Tournament!
Langa: Is it a great thing? Or not so much?
Miya: It's... hard to say!
Langa: We cannot lose in this beef...!
Reki: Langa is not so good at Japanese, so I should work hard and get lots of
karuta!
<< Overbought Medical Herb, and had a lot left over. >>
Langa:
Kusuri Kusa...?
Reki: It's
Yakusou! Healing item in the RPG!
(In Japanese, Medical Herb is called 薬草, and it seemed that Langa was unfamiliar with such game terms in Japanese, so he couldn't read the kanji correctly.)
Miya took the
karuta, seemed to be written by him. Miya and Koyomi high-fived each other, which was really cute. It was also cute how Reki, being the big brother that he is, said, "You can't mess with my sister, okay?"
Koyomi did not seem to understand what her brother meant. But Miya seemed to realize that Reki was talking about their romantic relationship, and he was upset. "No way!"
Miya: << Good-bye, a greeting when we should part: "Love Again." >>
Reki: What the heck?
Langa: Yeah, this is the one I wrote!
(According to the greeting by Hatanaka and Kobayashi, Kobayashi should redo the line here. Because at first it sounded like Langa was happy to say 'Love Again'. Kobayashi: "I thought Langa was happy because it's the
karuta he wrote. So I tried to perform with joy." Hatanaka: "Oh, but your first take sounded like he was happy with 'Love Again'!" Kobayashi: "That wasn't my intention..." WAIT WHAT)
Reki took the Love Again
karuta. There was a helicopter outside the window. It did not appear to be Adam's red helicopter, but if Adam knew that Langa had made a
karuta with "Love Again," he would no doubt be flattered. I know he would.
Langa: << Ketchup on poutine, it's a taste of home. >>
Reki: What the hell is that?
Miya: I've never heard of it...!
Reki and Miya looked skeptical, but Langa looked happy. There was a picture of a plate of poutine with ketchup.
Langa: I have to take this one, by myself...!
But, Koyomi took the poutine
karuta.
They fought a fierce battle, but eventually the match ended. Team Miya and Koyomi won with 2 more
karuta.
Miya&Koyomi: Now it is time for the punishment game...! (cheerfully)
As far as I remember, around this scene we hear the BGM Beethoven Symphony No.5, the same music in S1, Adam said "My Eve...!" What horrible children!
Koyomi: You have to piggyback to the supermarket and buy ice cream! I want one with soda flavor!
Reki: It's 2km away..!
Walking with Langa who was holding an umbrella on his back, Reki gasped for breath. "You're heavy! You eat too much!"
Langa: Next time, let's make and play
karuta in English!
Reki: Sounds too hard for me...
Langa: I want to play
karuta with Joe, Cherry, and others.
Reki: Unexpectedly, Shadow could be good at
karuta?
In the shade of the trees, Langa took over carrying Reki on his back. The rain had stopped and there was no need for an umbrella. Langa strode off and the two arrived at a convini. A rainbow appeared in the blue sky.
[End Credits]
A list of the cast, creators and crew scrolled vertically down the right half of the black screen. A small screen in the middle of the left half showed a replay of some OVA scenes. No lyrics were displayed, and it was quite difficult to hear what was being said in the theme song "SKATERS' QUEST".
[Cast Interviews]
Hatanaka sat in a red seat of the dark theater, one seat open, and Kobayashi sat. They both wore black hoodies with the rainbow-colored infinity sign on the left chest.
Hatanaka: Hello everyone. How was SK8 Extra Part? Are you having fun?
Kobayashi: Why do you speak in such a modest style?
Hatanaka: Oh yeah, since it's about the movie, I think it's better to try to talk modestly.
(In a famous movie program on Japanese TV, there had been a male MC who spoke in a polite manner for a long time. Hatanaka might show his respect to the MC.)
Hatanaka: Here we invite another person who knows a lot more about SK8!
Kobayashi: You could say they know everything about SK8.
(Utsumi appeared only by voice. She seems to be sitting across from Hatanaka and Kobayashi, out of camera view.)
- About each story: Rain and Cat
Utsumi: So you performed Reki and Langa after a long time. How was it? Were you able to become the characters?
Hatanaka: Oh my God! That's not what we could judge, you're the one who could judge!
Hatanaka: My performance started with excited lines, and maybe because I was nervous or over-prepared, I acted Reki in a really excited way. But I was instructed that it was too much.
Kobayashi: Our performances came after Reki's performance. We (maybe he and Nagatsuka) received his performance to act, so it wasn't very difficult for us to act as characters. It's always nice to see his stability of the performance as Reki!
- About each story: Serious
Utsumi: What do you think about the other stories?
Hatanaka: To put it bluntly, when I saw the finished anime of Joe and Cherry, they were even sillier than I had imagined when I read the script.
Utsumi: They were really childish, and I was afraid if it was too silly or not. But since it was the story of them in high school, we came to the conclusion that it's okay if they look silly.
Hatanaka: I was able to understand that they had been like that for a long time.
Kobayashi: They had some silly fights in the S1 as well, but I felt that they were kind of mature in S1.
- About each story: Morning Routine
Utsumi: This time, it was important that it was a day off for two of them.
Kobayashi: Do you think it is all right for Kikuchi to spend his day off in such a way?
Utsumi: I discussed with Uryu-san and the producers how Kikuchi would spend his days off, and they all had no objections.
Hatanaka: It was surprising for me to know that you, the director, recognize Kikuchi as such a lazy person.
Kobayashi: I was surprised with a big difference between his usual day and his day off.
Utsumi: This time it was their difference that was important, and I wanted to show the difference between them.
- About each story: Hiromi-chan
Kobayashi: I was comforted by Shadow's cute stories!
Hatanaka: I hope Hiromi continues to have his crush!
- What was difficult for you?
Utsumi: I had a hard time with... everything.
Hatanaka: Oh yeah, I understand, but what was especially hard for you?
Utsumi: I don't think I know much about Joe and Cherry. This time we tried to portray their past, and it ended up being really intense.
- How did you come up with the idea for each story?
Utsumi: One of the big themes for the OVA was: No skateboarding.
Hatanaka: Even though this is SK8!
Utsumi: I know some would criticize us for that, but that was our decision. I even made a promise to Bones, not to create the skateboarding scenes. However, Reki and Langa would start skateboarding whenever they had the chance... so I had no choice but to let it rain heavily.
Kobayashi: Why did you chose
karuta then?
Utsumi: We had a discussion with the producers and Okouchi-san about a story without skateboarding, but something fun. And we decided to let them have a fight with
karuta.
Utsumi: About the story of Adam and Kikuchi,
I wanted to see Adam with his hair down, in a natural style. We could not see him like that in S1.
Kobayashi: It was certainly a rare hairstyle of his.
Utsumi: That's what my memo said.
Hatanaka: I was also interested in Kikuchi's hairstyle!
Utsumi: This time, I gave instructions to Koyasu-san about the mood in which Adam would spend his day off.
Hatanaka: What surprised me about Adam was his humming, how elegant he was! Soon after he woke up he started singing like that, it was divine.
Utsumi: I was wondering if it was too soft or not.
Kobayashi: I agree. This time, he was soft.
Utsumi: Oh, you have good ears! Sometimes his performance sounded too mellow to me.
Utsumi: Not like Adam in S1, this time he looked soft. Not irritated, frustrated...
Kobayashi: Perhaps because it's his day off? Because it's the story on the day off, he would be able to tolerate or give permission to his dog to be lazy.
Hatanaka: Personally, I think it's a bit scary when Adam is soft!
Hatanaka: The scenes where they do their morning routine were good. But their conversation after Kikuchi woke up and they were together was so intense that I was excited!
(I was interested in what the "soft Adam" was that Koyasu-san had trouble with in his performance, but it was not a specific line or scene, I guess. The words "soft" or "tolerable" were the things mainly talked about Tadashi's bed hair. Personally, I agree with Hatanaka's comment about Adam's divine humming. I had a hard time remembering what they said...)
- The theme song "SKATERS' QUEST"
(According to the credits on "SKATERS' QUEST", the lyrics were written by the lyricist
Kiser Erina. Utsumi seemed to be supervising and writing the lyrics for the rap part of the song.)
Hatanaka: Why did you write the lyrics?
Utsumi: I got an offer from Uryu-san, maybe on a whim, "Would you like to try writing the lyrics for the theme song?" and I was like: "Yeah! I'd love to~"
Kobayashi: Oh no, you decided so casually!
Hatanaka: It was the first time you wrote the lyrics, right?
Utsumi: Yes, it was. To be honest, I had no chance to write lyrics. At first, I found fun in rhyming, and the process of writing lyrics was fun.
Hatanaka: Hey, that sounds like what rap musicians say!
Kobayashi: So you spun the lyrics!
Utsumi: But then I ran out of ideas and it became difficult to write. When I thought "I've done it!" the lyrics looked good, but later I also wondered if the lyrics were too stupid...
Kobayashi: Please take it easy, our characters are not like those kind of smart high school boys.
Hatanaka: Yes, yes, the lyrics were right for us!
Kobayashi: I think it is very good. The lyrics are so detailed about the content of SK8 that I wondered, "How many times has the person who wrote the lyrics seen SK8?" and the truth was, the lyricist was the person who created SK8!
Utsumi: What do you think about the song? Your thoughts as a singer.
Kobayashi: The song was really difficult to sing from the beginning to the end. Especially the rap part was hard. They prepared a reference song sung by another person, but I did not use it as a reference at all, and sang it in an almost flat tone (= Otherwise I would not have been able to sing it all!). But it was hard because we had to be in sync with the rhythm and the pitch.
Hatanaka: I seriously thought about it: "What is it that Reki sings?" (= The singing should be different from my singing as a professional singer.) I had no choice but to continue singing with my natural voice. and tried to sing it vigorously. But it ended up being too funny, so I had to redo it. It was really hard to see the balance between a character and a singer.
Utsumi: I guess we kept you waiting too long, but we were finally able to show you the new SK8. I'm really happy to show you this EXTRA PART. It is thanks to all of you who love the SK8 that we are able to show you new things. Thank you for taking the time to come to the theater for the advanced screening! I want to send you my BIG LOVE!!
Kobayashi: I'm happy to be back on SK8. After the TV series ended a few years ago, we have had constant support from the fans. And there have been new things like audio dramas, events, or merchandise all the time. We really appreciate your passionate support for us! Now we have an OVA and an advanced screening. I was really glad and happy to be able to voice Langa again, and I'm looking forward to performing him in the future!
Hatanaka: This time with the OVA, I've never been so happy to see the end of a recording because I know there's going to be a new story! I feel like I'm ready to perform Reki soon, but from now on, it would take more time to create the S2. But we know we have the sequel! I'm really looking forward to the next story!
At the very end, the three said together: "Love again ♡"
