FrieAme Modern Day Hospital AU Part 3 (Ongoing)

FrieAme AU where Friede's a paediatrician and Amethio's a terminally ill inpatient. Friede's in charge of Amethio's care and keeps telling himself not to get attached but oops Friede gets attached. So does Amethio. Contains main character death, obviously!

Thanks to my good friend for always contributing great ideas! <3

Thinking about some scenario in which Ame needs to be bathed/washed (his body's not listening to him at all) but Frie's too busy to do it like he usually does... Ame refuses to let any of the other staff do his personal care, and he's at the stage where he he's always having meltdowns over things not going his way
[Me] Frie ends up ringing Gibe because he has no idea how to get Ame to behave, and Gibe agrees to visit along with Ham to see if they can calm him down a bit (Frie doesn't really think it'll work, but, well, he can't afford to not take care of his other patients)
"[Me] Before moving on to his other duties, Frie explains to Ame that Gibe would be visiting to help with things and Ame is very upset at the idea.

Ame: NO! Only... Only Friede...
Frie: I can't. And you're not sitting around in that filthy state. You wouldn't want that, right?
Ame: [Sobs] Friede..."
"[Me] Gibe and Ham arrive quite soon after, and Orio shows them to Ame's room.

Ori: Hey, buddy. You really do need a bath, you know. And your sheets probably need changing, which I can't really do if you're still in bed
Ori: Why don't you let your father take care of you?
Ame: NO!"
"[Me] Ori: ...Okay. But Friede isn't able to bathe you today. It has to be either your father or your... uh...

Orio pauses and looks over at Ham

Ori: Y-Your butler???"
[Me] (Nobody other than Frie really knows what Ham's relation to Ame is, just that he's the handsome elderly gentleman who shows up with Ame's father sometimes)
"[Me] Ham: Attendant, actually
Ori: Uh. Right. Anyway. It's gonna be one of them. Or both.
Ame: [Shakes his head]
Ori: Aren't you usually pretty fussy about hygiene and stuff? Surely you don't want to stay like this...
Ame: ...Only Friede... Only Friede can...
Ori: Well, he can't.
Ame: [Sobs loudly]"
"[Me] Gibe watches, having to force himself to keep his mouth shut. He desperately wants to scold Ame for his behaviour and tell him he should just go along with what the nurse is telling him, but...

...Gibe can understand Ame's reluctance"
"[Me] Gibe goes to walk over to Ame's bedside, but is immediately hit by an overwhelming, awful smell, and freezes.

Gibe: (How long has he been... like that...?)"
"[Me] Gibe clears his throat, and Ame flinches as he looks over at his father

Gibe: Hamber can do it for you. Since it's obvious you don't want me to be involved.
Ame: ...[Sniff] I'll... I'll wait... f-for... for Friede...
Gibe: Don't be disgusting. He could be several hours. How are you supposed to put up with that putrid stench for that long?"
"[Me] Ham: Gibeon-sama--

Gibe realises he's been overly harsh and immediately feels ashamed of himself. It's not Ame's fault. Not entirely.

Gibe: [Ahem] Let Hamber do it. Hamber knows what he's doing taking care of people. He will not judge you or your body.
Ame: ...

Ame sniffles and glances at Ham shyly"
"[Me] Ham: I would never. Amethio-sama, your father is right in that it is a rather silly idea to wait for your doctor to return. Please, let me do this for you
Ame: ....

Ame looks... scared. Gibe's not sure why."
"[Me] Ame: ...But...
Ham: Amethio-sama... It's in your best interests to cooperate
Ame: ...
Ham: Please, for your own sake...
Ame: [Sobs] F-FINE! I GET IT! I'LL DO IT!"
"[Me] Ori looks very relieved. She explains to Ham that she's gotten Ame a change of clothes and a towel and everything else he needs ready, and she'll go get the bath running while Ame calms down a bit

Once Ori leaves, Ame pretends like Gibe and Ham aren't there"
"[Me] Gibe tries again to approach Ame, but as he does, he gags -- the smells are all just too much for him

Ham: Gibeon-sama...?
Gibe, covering his mouth with the back of his hand: ...It's nothing
Ham: Are you alright?
Gibe: I am. Don't--
Ame: ...Sorry..."
"[Me] Gibe realises Ame's talking to him, and for a moment, he's confused

Ame: I... I'm sorry...
Gibe: [Clears throat] You have done nothing to warrant apologising. Now, settle yourself. Hamber shall take care of everything for you
Ame: [Nods] O-Okay..."
"[Me] Ori returns a few minutes later and helps Ham load Ame into his wheelchair.

Gibe isn't sure what to make of it all. There's something about it that makes him really uncomfortable, even though... there shouldn't be"
[Me] Ori asks Gibe if he could help wheel some of the monitors to the bathroom, since a couple of them should only come off for the duration of the bath, and Gibe reluctantly agrees
[Me] He walks behind the others. A couple of times, Ame turns around, as if to check that Gibe hasn't suddenly vanished and left him...
[Me] Gibe refuses to go into the bathroom with them. It's not his place, and if Ame doesn't want him involved, then he'd be being disrespectful ("I thought the entire point of all of this was that I actually took his feelings into consideration," Gibe comments)
[Me] But why is Ame... looking at Gibe like he does want Gibe to go in with them?
"[Me] Gibe: I doubt you could easily fit the two of us in the room with you. I shall wait out here.
Ame: ...Father...
Gibe: I am not mad at you, Amethio
Ame: [Nods]"
"[Me] The bathroom isn't too far from one of the waiting areas, so Gibe takes a seat in one of the chairs there.

Ori went into the bathroom just to detach Ame's monitors but quickly emerges again. She approaches Gibe"
"[Me] Ori: Uh... Thanks for doing this. Friede would usually just deal with him, but...
Gibe: It's quite alright. Having someone bath you is... admittedly a very intimate thing, regardless of the context, so I understand his apprehension towards simply letting anyone do it"
"[Me] Gibe is also aware that he has physically hurt Ame in the past, and that surely must be a large part of why Ame doesn't trust Gibe being alone with him, or around him when he's so defenceless and vulnerable

Gibe shudders at the knowledge that Ame feels that way"
"[Me] Ori: He's a good kid, you know. Even though he has a very sharp tongue, he's never outright rude to us... He may not listen to us most of the time, but he'll force himself to thank us whenever we help him with something.
Ori: I can't imagine how it must feel to just... completely lose your independence..."
"[Me] Gibe: Neither can I. I don't think anyone truly can until they experience it...
Ori: You're probably right, yeah"
"[Me] There are several moments of silence before Gibe speaks up. He decides to ask a rather insensitive question. It's been bothering him for many weeks.

Gibe: How do you... do it?
Ori: Er... I don't understand what you mean. Do what?
Gibe: Your... Your job"
"[Me] Gibe: How can you just... constantly deal with these situations? All these children who... have no idea what's happening to them... who, understandably, are always crying and no doubt terrified of everything...
Gibe: How in the world do you stay so calm while talking to them? How do you all... cope with seeing so much pain?"
"[Me] Ori's speechless. She seems to mull over her answer for a while, and Gibe starts to regret being so direct.

But it's something he's wondered about since he started visiting Ame. These doctors and nurses are always having to deal with children who are suffering. And yet they make it seem like such an easy job..."
"[Me] Ori: Well... it's hard. Sometimes it's, like, really hard, actually. Especially when something goes wrong or one of the kids has a medical emergency. It's super stressful at the best of times...
Ori: But you know... I never once blame them. They'd rather be at home than in hospital. They don't want to have to live here."
"[Me] Ori: The way I see it, I try and at least make them happy. I try to encourage them as much as I can. And I know the others do the same.
Ori: But whenever someone... moves on, so to speak, it's extremely difficult. It makes you feel powerless. All we can do is hope the kiddo enjoyed their time here as much as they could"
[Me] Ori: I know that Friede in particular gets overly attached to his patients... He's... had several rough patches. He never handles death well, no matter who it is. We always remind him that he shouldn't get overly involved, but does he listen? Of course not [Smirks]
[Me] Ori: So like... I guess what I'm trying to say is that we're in this for the kids and their families. As heartbreaking as it is when things go wrong and when patients die, we can at least know that we've helped them in some way. Hopefully, anyway!
"[Me] Gibe: ...
Gibe: I see. That certainly is admirable...
Ori: Well, the person who started this hospital apparently did it to help the disadvantaged and the people who had nowhere else to go. He travelled overseas for ages and supposedly it really opened his eyes to a lot of issues in the world... so he wanted to do something..."
[Me] Ori: I don't know the details, since I've only heard this story from Friede, but it seems like he's a super nice person who just wants to help others. I've only met him once! Honestly, he seemed a bit eccentric [Laughs]
"[Me] Gibe sits there quietly. He knows Ori's talking about Luci.

That would indeed be a very Luci-like thing to do..."
"[Me] Gibe: As someone who has met the founder of this hospital, I concur that he is, indeed, eccentric. Amongst... many other things
Ori: Heh"
"[Me] Ori then realises she should probably check on Ham and Ame, so she heads off to do that

Gibe really has no idea how any of the staff here manage to keep themselves together"
"[Me] A few minutes later, Ham appears with Ame, who has fallen asleep in his wheelchair.

Ham: He hardly protested. He behaved himself well
Gibe: Good.
Gibe: Ah. Where did the nurse go?
Ham: She realised she hadn't yet changed Amethio-sama's bed...
Gibe: ..............Right"
[Me] Gibe, once again, walks behind Ham while helping move the monitors, which have been reattached properly
"[Me] Once they get back to Ame's room, Ori and Mollie are finishing changing the bed. They tell Gibe and Ham that, since Ame's asleep, the men should probably head back to home (""or work or wherever"")

Gibe feels odd not telling Ame he's leaving, but he doesn't want to disturb him, so he agrees."
"[Me] When they're back in the car, Gibe immediately lights a cigarette.

He doesn't always smoke. But considering he can't exactly have a strong bottle of whisky in the middle of the afternoon when he needs to return to work, tobacco will suffice"
"[Me] Gibe: I could never be a doctor. Or a nurse.
Ham: ...I feel the same"
"[Me] Ham: And... May I say something, Gibeon-sama?
Gibe: Go on.
Ham: Bathing Amethio-sama... reminded me of the few times I assisted you after your, er... injury. I never once thought that I would be... doing that it Amethio-sama as well..."
"[Me] Gibe: Did you not when he was a child?
Ham: Ah, I mean as a teenager..."
"[Me] Ham: Gibeon-sama, Amethio-sama is... He's so... light...
Gibe: Hamber?
Ham: He barely weighs any more than the last time I recall bathing him, and that was... at least seven years ago..."
[Me] Ham's voice is shaking. It's not like him to be disturbed by things, nor would he normally ever comment on somebody's weight
"[Me] Ham: He's sixteen, and yet... He's not any heavier than when he was nine...
Ham: A-A teenage boy... of Amethio-sama's height... s-should not be so... frail..."
"[Me] Gibe: ...I suppose... it simply means he's rather...
Ham: I am aware. But still, it...
Ham: I certainly was not expecting to be able to pick him up so easily..."
"[Me] Gibe: ...

Gibe takes a large puff of his cigarette and stares out the window in silence.

Ham says nothing else"
[Me] Anyway Gibe invites Ham to have a drink with him that evening, and Ham declines since he has a lot of work to do, but he does make sure he finds Gibe some extremely strong whisky
