to mask a cage

WC: 228 || Ship: Gopherhail || Rating: G(?)

Concept: When the dust had settled, Gopher found himself with an ache that he could not dispel. He craved something that was more than Order, more than his lofty goals. A warm laugh, a creative mind, a smile that could brighten a room---Mikhail Char Legwork. However, he knew that things were easily taken, especially in the Dreamscape. So he crafts a cage, crafts a beautiful house, to cure the ache he feels.

If there was one thing Gopher learned early on, is that no matter how well you decorate its bars, no matter how prettily you etch into the golden metal, a cage will always look like a cage. Even if you hide its bars in swathes of fabric, mask the smell of metal with perfumes, and pile up delicate pillows to soften the cold floor, the one inside the cage will know they are being kept locked up. So, he learned to be smarter, to be better.

The bars become brick walls, the etchings become paintings and lovingly framed storyboards. The fabrics become curtains, the perfumes become the scent of home cooked food. The pillows become couches, chairs, and a warm bed.

He does not walk his beloved into the cage, but instead invites him into the carefully crafted home that Gopher has built for him. Walks Mikhail through the living room, showing him the storyboards that he had let him have, shows him the room that can be used as a workshop for his clocks. Shows him the silver rails dancing on the ceiling that he had hated painting, but knew that‌ the little extra touch would seal the deal.

And when Mikhail bashfully smiles, rubbing the back of his head with hand and asking if it was really okay for him to stay, Gopher knows he’s won.
