Leo wiped away the sweat that was about to drip into his eyes. Sweat dripped through the gaps in his hat. Leo took off his hat, feeling an unfamiliar discomfort that was different from when he was wearing a mask. He patted his neck, hoping the sweat would cool him down a bit. However, the heat that clung to him still did not disappear.
“Leo, what's wrong? Your face looks red.“ A man next to Leo leans forward.
"Nah, it's nothing, Toby! I'm just, uh, pumped for the game!" Leo tried to bluff it away like that.
But there wasn’t even a game happening at the park’s ballfield. In fact, there were fewer members than usual because they had been repeatedly turned down when they asked to go out. The only ones on the baseball field were Leo's cousins: a stingray, an alligator, and a frog. The three of them were playing catch in a lackadaisical manner. There was nothing exciting about the scene.
The thud of the ball landing in the mitt was absurdly dull. Leo could only smile in an attempt to cover up.
Leo’s body had been burning for a while, the heat swirling inside him.
Just as he began to suspect he might have a fever, something brushed against his neck.
He yelped and flinched, stumbling back as his friend’s eyes widened in surprise.
"Ah! Sorry, I-I just got so startled!"
"Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you! You look like you could use a break—let’s find some shade."
Toby stuck out his big front teeth and smiled, his usual calm demeanor reassuring. Unlike Leo, who often struggled with composure, Toby had a knack for staying positive, even in tense situations. Toby has a maturity and composure that Leo lacks. Even now, when Leo was suddenly startled and made an excuse in a panic, Toby didn't mind and was worried about Leo. He even suggested that Leo rest in the shade of a tree because he was so hot.
Since going to school, Leo has made a fair number of human friends.
Of them, Toby was the one he trusted most.
"Yeah, I guess I’ll do that. Sorry about earlier."
"It’s fine, don’t worry about it."
Leo takes the hand that is offered to him. The heat that radiates from his body makes him feel as if his whole body is about to boil. The hand in his grasp felt pleasantly tingly, drawing a small cry from Leo.
Leo, who has more strength than a human, has to restrain himself from crushing his friend's hand due to his lack of composure. Leo is holding back the urge to scream or to lash out.
Oh no, I'm so hot, I'm going to faint.
"Sorry, Toby, my dad’s totally on my case about curfew."
Before Leo's foot could touch the ground, he was pulled back by the arm wrapped around his neck. When something hit his back, a familiar smell spread through Leo's nostrils. The moment he inhaled the sweet, spicy smell to the full, Leo's legs lost their strength and he collapsed.
"Hey, you alright, bro? Man, Donnie was right on the money, wasn’t he?"
If it weren't for Raph's supporting arm, Leo might have ended up rolling on the ground. Raph's face, as he stared in surprise, looked distorted due to Leo's tear-blurred vision.
"Raph, I'm burning up... I feel really hot..."
"Donnie asked me to check on you, said your pheromone levels were off the charts. What the hell's going on?"
Raph's voice sounded exasperated, but it felt distant to Leo. He rubbed his cheek against Raph's fingertips, which fluttered in front of his eyes. Raph’s fingers twitched as Leo was effortlessly lifted up. When he regained his senses, all he could see was Raph's back and the ground beneath him. His feet hung limp, held firmly by Raph’s hands, leaving only his toes able to move.
"That's right. Leo should rest."
"Yeah... I’ll handle it. Don’t worry."
Leo listened to this exchange as if he were somewhere far away. It may have been his imagination that Raph's voice sounded harsh. Before he knew it, the shadows in Leo's field of vision had increased, and the voices he heard were those of people concerned about him.
”Ah!!“
Leo screamed loudly in response to the light slap on his bottom, and he quickly covered his mouth with the little bit of reason he had left, but it was too late.
"...Well, Let's go home quickly.” With a low voice, Raph carried Leo on his shoulders and left the park in a hurry.
Leo shifted uncomfortably, feeling something wet in his trousers and a strange sensation against him.
Caught between consciousness and instinct, Leo thought he glimpsed a flash of red and instinctively reached for it. But perhaps it was nothing more than a hallucination.
